LGHS Facility Renovation Project

Currently the South Bay Community Tennis Association (SBCTA) is working on the LGHS Tennis Facility Renovation Project. The project will combine matching funds from the Los Gatos High School, LGS Recreation Department, SBCTA, Local Corporate Sponsors, New Mellinium Foundation, and grants from the USTA and NRPA.

The goal is to raise $175,000 to renovate current tennis courts, replace fencing, and add lights to courts #4 and #5.

USTA Schools Program

One of the most enjoyable experiences I have in our organization is through the USTA Schools Program. The program aim is to expose young children to tennis right on their own blacktops & playgrounds of their school. The NEW progression tennis equipment (transition balls & mini nets) has revolutionized the way Tennis is introduced to new players. The tennis industry has learned from other sports that it is incorrect to teach young beginners on a regulation size court with regulation size balls. You must modify the playing field and equipment to make the game easier and more FUN for beginners. Everyone has heard of T-Ball for Baseball players and sees the modified ball and field used for young soccer or basketball players, but until NOW there was no real solution for tennis. By using the NEW progression tennis balls the game is slowed down and the ball is easier to control. The mini portable nets and shortened court (think foresquare) allow smaller players to play on a court more suitable for their size and speed. With little or no coaching a young player can develop the skills to rally the ball in minutes. The new nets can be placed on a driveway, blacktop, backyard, and turn any surface into a MINI tennis court.

Through support from the USTA, the SBCTA has run several successful programs at elementary schools in the South Bay:

Payne Elementary School
Los Alamitos Elementary
Lakeside Elementary
McKinley Elementary
Castillero Middle School
San Antonio Elementary
Williams School
Stratford Elementary

Every summer the South Bay CTA gathers the community tennis players for the Annual Rock & Rally Tennis Festival. The signature event features games & prizes for the whole family. Last year special guest, Wayne Bryan, stopped in for some fun. Bryan, father of World's #1 Doubles team, Bob & Mike, ran an on-court clinic, took photographs, and signed FREE copies of his book, "How to raise your child to be a champion in Athletics, Arts & Education. Tennis Court Resurfacing Projects

Several public tennis courts and high school tennis courts are in need of repair. The South Bay CTA has combined efforts of non-profit organizations to repair court surfaces in the South Bay.

In 2002, the South Bay CTA, USTA, Los Gatos High School, and Los Gatos-Saratoga Recreation Deptartment combined forces to resurface the courts at Los Gatos High School. These courts went to immediate use. The Los Gatos Wildcats Boys team went on an impressive record, taking the Central Coast Section Title 3 years in a row and capturing the NorCal State Title twice. The LGS Recreation Programs participation quadrupled in the last 4 years. Nationally recognized as a no-cut sport Los Gatos High School fielded a girls team of 68 players in 2006.

In 2005, the South Bay CTA combined with the USTA, NRPA, and the City of San Jose to resurface the tennis courts at Castillero Middle School. The South Bay CTA followed up the resurfacing by hosting a Teacher in-Service and trained over 20 PE teacher from San Jose how to implement a tennis program at their school. An after school program was established and a middle school team competed in the Mid-Peninsula Tennis League. A 6-Tennis program (Parent run league) followed and a summer Ralleyball camp has been established on the courts at Castillero.
